Five Reasons to Go Green When You Clean

As stories of the perils of climate change increasingly dominate the media, we’re all under more pressure than ever before to look for ways to act in as eco friendly a way as possible in our everyday lives. One of the ways we can personally reduce the burdens we’re placing on the environment is to look at the cleaning products we use on a daily basis and make the switch to green cleaning solutions. These may only be small steps, but changes like this can all add up to a brighter future for our planet.

1. First, there’s a popular misconception that using green products in home or office cleaning will be more expensive. That’s not necessarily the case, though. The bicarbonate of soda you use for baking cakes and biscuits, for instance, is a great yet gentle abrasive cleaner when mixed with water or applied to a damp sponge. This will remove dirt from furniture, work surfaces and more. Half a cup in your mop bucket with some warm water makes a really effective floor cleaner. And when mixed with vinegar, baking soda can even remove grime and odours from your plug holes. Lemon juice, beeswax, white vinegar and pumice stones are all pretty cheap but can be used in a multitude of ways around your home or office.
2. Next, these natural products all smell a whole lot nicer than the chemical whiffs that come from named brand cleaning sprays and solutions. Lemon juice or white vinegar to cleanse kitchen surfaces smell much more pleasant than the bleach or artificial perfume stenches that heavy-duty cleaning fluids emit.
3. That all makes them safer to have round the home too. Children, especially under the age of five, are particularly susceptible to chemicals in the air, as is anyone who suffers from asthma or other breathing-related allergies. Environmentally friendly cleaning solutions simply don’t pollute your indoor spaces in the same way. They’re also less toxic if accidentally consumed.
4. Fourthly, because there are no pesky chemicals, your belongings and furniture simply won’t suffer damage in the same way. Toxic chemicals in traditional cleaning products can damage delicate fabrics and furnishings, and even hard surfaces over time, reducing their lifespan.
5. And fifthly, and most importantly, you’re doing the planet and your home or office environment a whole lot of good. Your indoor air quality will improve, as well as knowing you’re contributing positively to a healthier atmosphere for everyone.
